Webraska and Schlumberger partner up for world's first demonstration of hassle-free parking using WAP mobile phones
Paris, France - 9th March 2000 - Webraska Mobile Technologies and
Schlumberger today announce a partenership to demonstrate a new hassle-saving
service for motorists. By combining data on parking place occupancy - whether
on-street or in car parks - with real-time traffic information, maps and route
guidance, motorists with WAP mobile phones will be able to obtain
up-to-the-minute information on parking availability at their destination.
With the new service, WAP mobile phone users will be able to key in their location
or destination and, from the innovative combination of Schlumberger parking data
and Webraska's Internet-based Distributed Navigation services, receive a real-time
update of available parking in the surrounding streets and car parks, en-route traffic
information, maps and best route to the chosen parking place.
The parking terminals and management systems of Schlumberger will transmit
current occupancy rates data across GSM, Mobitex, PSTN or Internet networks to
the open-interface Parking Information Server. The server calculates occupancy
levels for the area plus several dynamic characteristics such as whether the
number of available parking spaces is increasing or decreasing, allowing the
motorist to select the optimum parking location thus saving time and considerable
frustration. Webraska's servers will then calculate the best itinerary and guide the
phone's user to their chosen location.
Over 95% of the Schlumberger parking terminals currently installed around the
world can be easily upgraded to generate the necessary data, offering a significant
opportunity for city and local governments to enhance their service image to drivers.
"This partnership with Schlumberger is a logical step for Webraska, adding an
essential aspect of urban mobility - where to leave your car on arrival - to our
current real-time services that help mobile phone users reach their destination as
effortlessly as possible," states Jean-Michel Durocher, Chief Executive Officer and
Founder of Webraska. "This agreement is also a significant advance in our efforts
to provide mobile phone operators and their subscribers with value-added proximity
services."
"Combining 20 years of Schlumberger expertise in parking equipment and services
with Webraska's competencies in integrating dynamic data with real-time traffic
maps and route guidance enlarges the scope of value-added services available to
the growing number of users of WAP-compliant mobile phones," adds Axel
Hausen, Marketing Manager, Schlumberger. "This new service will help city, local
and regional governments to significantly improve their image in the eyes of vehicle
drivers and contribute substantially to revitalising city centres and leisure areas."
