New Products - CARIS Spatial Fusion
Last month in Denver the guys from CARIS-Universal Systems, Fredericton, N.B. gave me a quick look
at Spatial Fusion, their internet-based mapping solution used for integrating
distributed data sources over the web. I viewed spatial data that was stored in ESRI
Shape, Geotiff, Mapinfo MIF, Caris, and Oracle8i Spatial. All data was stored on
web servers in a variety of locations but was viewed simultaneously with the map
viewer... very cool!

Spatial Fusion, internet-based
technology for accessing, visualizing, and
analyzing heterogeneous, distributed data
sources in a highly transparent, user-friendly
environment combines the speed and
convenience of the Internet with the ability to
read multiple data sources in their native
format.
Spatial Fusion can read CARIS files, ESRI shape files, Oracle 8i Spatial, and GeoTiff
data sources in their own format, without the need for translation.
Maps can be made up of multiple data sources, the map being divided
into multiple layers, or collections of spatial features that are all of the same type.
Spatial Fusion will reduce headaches associated with managing various data projections as it supports
multiple data projections. Also, there is no need to centralize your spatial data as The Fusion Data
Services are registered with the Orbix-Implementation Repository, allowing the Java
client to make requests and receive responses any data service in the repository. Data can
be stored on two different machines or on two different servers, but, from the client’s
perspective, the data appears to be stored in the same place.
With Spatial Fusion, you can accomplish the following:
- create maps by merging data from ESRI shapefiles, CARIS files, MapInfo, Tiff, and
data stored in Oracle 8i
- view multiple map layers made with different projections
- navigate through multiple map layers
- query a layer’s attributes
- classify features within a layer by range or unique value
- annotate features within a layer with any of its associated attributes
