Hello once again from the GeoCommunity. It's been a long time coming, but finally we have another
monthly newsletter for you! Things got a bit hectic around the GeoCommunity over the past month or so as we worked on
our website re-design. We're getting settled into our new look and everything is getting back to normal.
judging by the feedback we've received, most of you seem to appreciate the new design and are taking advantage of
the new features and more robust navigation. We still have some work to do and appreciate your patience. I'm sure
there's still a few kinks to straighten out and any help you can offer up would be appreciated. If you
stumble across something that doesn't work or find a broken link, please tell us about it. This month's newsmag
will summarize some of the new features and also brings some interesting GIS features provided by some of our
dedicated visitors.
A primer on E 9-1-1 -
Get the low-down on enhanced 911 (e 911). We offer up some introductory material, check out the latest
industry advancements, and take a look at e911 around the web. Be sure to tell us about your e911 issues!
.geo Top Level Domain -
SRI International (SRI) proposes to ICANN a new top-level domain (TLD), .geo, which will make the
full power of geospatial knowledge available to all Internet users. Properly implemented, .geo will
make the Internet more efficient, both technically and as a tool for human communication and
commerce. SRI International has provided us with the full Executive Summary submitted.
BAM... Bird Avoidance Model -
The United States Air Force has developed a predictive Bird Avoidance Model (BAM) using
Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. Read on for more!
Community based GIS in rural Australia -
We take a look at an excellent website from down under. HRIC is a rural, collaborative,
community-focussed GIS having six signatory partners. Additionally, the website is rich in content and
provides some excellent examples of work integrating remotely sensed data with traditional GIS.
Deer Creek Watershed Project -
In this project, more than 1,000 students are testing chemical and biological
water quality in the metropolitan St. Louis area and analyzing their data with ArcView GIS.
The GeoCommunity Gets A New Look -
The new look of the GeoCommunity has been in the planning stages for some time. Now it's finally a reality!
A cleaner, bolder look has been developed in order to better integrate the main nodes of the GeoCommunity.
In the past it has been somewhat confusing, developing separate identities for SpatialNews, The GISDataDepot,
and The GeoCommunity. They are all, in fact, one... each having a different focus but serving the same community.
The new design will bring together the sites and foster a tighter community with more interaction and a more
intuitive user interface. Here are some of the major additions and enhancements. Colleges and Universities
can now post career announcements in the Career Center for free.
