A primer on E 9-1-1
GIS and e911
e9GIS from MicroDATA GIS --
Essentially an ArcView extension, designed for municipal
development and maintenance or enhanced 9-1-1 (E911) GIS map data.
The application controls and simplifies the creation, maintenance,
and quality control of GIS and ALI data. MicroDATA also
has a product known as e9collector which is designed
to capture coordinate and residential information using real-time
differential GPS.
Compasscom --
Compasscom Navigating solutions for Mapping,
Surveying, and Vehicle Tracking are used by public safety and emergency response agencies for
Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL). AVL is a technology that allows dispatchers, supervisors, managers,
politicians, and even the public to see the current position and status of vehicles from remote locations
on computer displayed maps. Benefits such as increased fleet efficiency, improved public and driver
safety, better emergency response time, enhanced fleet control, and good public relations are all
realized through the proper implementation of an AVL system.

State of Vermont Enhanced 9-1-1 --
Vermont's statewide enhanced 9-1-1 network is the first in the nation to be completely
digital. Vermont's system is also the first to deploy a GIS in a fully integrated fashion.
Vermont's call-taker training, certification and quality control program is one of the most
rigorous available.
According to the Vermont e911 home page,
the concept of a nationwide emergency telephone number was first adopted in Great Britain
in 1937. Since then, other countries in Europe and elsewhere have employed a three-digit
uniform emergency number. In the United States, President Johnson’s Commission on Law
Enforcement and Administration of Criminal Justice recommended a nationally uniform
three-digit number in 1967. A year later, ATT announced it had reserved the numbers 9-1-1
for emergency use nationwide.
