The First Geo-spatial wireless news channel!
Greetings again from NorthWest Florida. January came and went so fast that I couldn't get the latest installment of our monthly NewsMag until now... OOPS ;0) I'm sure you'll find that it was worth the wait. Developing content for this monthly publication is done by a combination of offering soltions and material that GeoCommunity vistors have requested, and summarizing my own personal interests and research findings. This month I start with a look at how the leading names in the GIS industry have re-packaged themselves to appeal to the LBS market. Other "must see" features in this edition include A review of Manifold GIS, a look at ARCIMS 3.0 from a developers perspective, and a tutorial designed to walk users through the steps needed to import/view .E00 data into ArcView or GeoMedia. We also use this opportunity to introduce you to a very nifty data viewing product with the ability to quickly view and query more that 80 data formats. As always, please help us out by forwarding this newsletter to at least one friend or associate. This edition has been sent to more than 18,000 people world-wide so we must be doing something right! Please be sure to send your comments, suggestions, or suggestions to the editor (editor@geocomm.com). PS, If you plan on attending GITA next month in San Diego, be sure to say hi if you see me run past you. Exhibitors, I'm always up for a party so be sure to include me on your party distribution list (editor@geocomm.com) if you plan on hosting party or special event! -- Glenn Letham, editor

Features

The LBS Race Is On! - LBS... It's becoming a widely recognized term that we've all become accustomed to seeing (and using). We offer up our own definition and explanation of LBS and take a look at a number of traditional "GIS" players and how they've re-packaged their content to focus on a "sexier" industry with hopes of grabbing the lions share of the market.

ArcIMS 3.0 - An Application Developer's Perspective - ArcIMS 3.0 from ESRI provides a fair amount of "out of the box" functionality to allow internet neophytes to deploy their spatial data. The latest production release became available in June of 2000, and many questions still exist about its capabilities. The author has deployed two custom applications with this product for two different organizations, and will use this paper as an opportunity to share his experiences and observations. Thanks to Andrew Waxman, Chief Technology Officer, Telemorphic Inc., for this contribution.

Viewing & Importing .E00 Data - This may seem fairly introductory to many, however, there's a number of people out there struggling with ARC/INFO .E00 data. We've provided this document to help users import E00 data into ArcView and GeoMedia. For those of you wishing to simply "view" the data we introduce you to a nifty, free viewing program you can use to quickly and easily view E00 and more than 80 other common data formats.

A GeoCommunity ArcView Freebie - Jurgen Evert of Germany has passed on his latest ArcView extension to the GeoCommunity. Titled "AV-Plus 2.1.2 The Project Manager", the author states that by using the AV-Tools dialog in AV-Plus, scripts can be easily and permanently associated with buttons, icons, etc..., for rapid loading in each new project. AV-Plus uses .dbf tables for both themes and scripts, so that these and related settings are available for both new and long established projects. This also can facilitate the sharing of scripts across a network. The freely downloadable extension is available in English and German.

Landsat Data Source - Thanks to Joseph Kerski of the USGS for providing the heads-up on this very cool data resource. In the words of one of our long-time site visitors, here's "a whacking pant load of data" for ya! The NASA Observatorium provides Landsat Thematic Mapper Data Sets from locations around the globe. A number of individual band and .LAN files for the seven TM bands are available in both PC and Mac formats. Select data products from Calgary, London, Amsterdam, Russia, Montana, just to name a few.
