FEATURE ARTICLE - Microsoft MapPoint 2000
------------------------------------------------------------

If you don't visit GIS newsgroups, don't subscribe to any GIS related mailing lists or don't read any GIS related publications then your likely not aware that Microsoft is entering the PC mapping software race. Microsoft's® MapPointÖ software is scheduled for release this year. Here's some info directly from Microsoft to bring you up to speed on what to expect. They've generously supplied me with the final Beta release and I will be telling you my personal feelings about the product in next month's SpatialNews. The keyword that I feel you should keep in mind here
is that Mappoint is "Business" mapping software.

ABOUT MAPPOINT

Mappoint is definitely going to make a splash, after all there are over 35 million MS Office users in the US alone that are potential users of Mappoint. Keep in mind, however, that the driving force behind Mappoint will be the street level data that the product comes bundled with - street level data for every major centre in the U.S WOW! For the international arena there is a minor dissapointment, the product will be released only in the US initially. Look for later releases in the UK and perhaps Canada.

*NEW* MP2K- your source for news, tips, tutorials, discussion and FREE stuff for Microsoft MapPoint 2000!

For even more info on Mappoint check out the January issue of "Business Geographics" http://www.bg.geoplace.com

of you who think you could still learn a thing or two about
either of these products or for people who aren't too thrilled
with the manuals shipped with the software. The "Inside" books
offer real examples, include data sets, and walk you through
processes step by step.

GIS IN CANADA, EH!
Nunavut - "Our Land" in Inuktitut, the Inuit language.
------------------------------------------------------------

Although this isn't a GIS focussed site, it is a site that holds very significant geographic information about Canada. On April 1, 1999, the new territory of Nunavut came into being, taking in the central and eastern portions of the
Northwest Territories. Nunavut is the result of the largest land claim ever settled in Canada. The territory will make up one fifth of Canada's land mass, approximately 2 million square kilometres.

For everything you want to know about Nunavut go to:

Early this month, a small group of GIS professionals met to discuss their
frustration with the roadblocks and difficulties imposed on spatial data
managers in Canada by government charges for spatial data distribution and
use. As none of them could think of sound reasons to justify these charges,
they decided to publicly express our personal opinions on this issue, and
provide a forum for other interested parties to express theirs as well.

The URL is http://members.home.net/freedata/

If you are interested in this issue, please visit the website, and express
your opinion. They are also looking for:

* examples of charges for spatial data affecting your organization's
economic activity, or its ability to carry out its mandate.

* financial analysis comparing the costs of 'setting up the store' for data
sales compared to revenue received.

* comparing revenues generated by sales between government agencies
compared to sales to private customers.

Please forward this message to any Canadians who may be
interested in the issue.

'Roll Your Own' Molodensky (Molodensky for short) actually

reasonably good approximations for the appropriate Molodensky
Transformation parameters.

SPATIAL WEBMASTER TIPS: SUPERSTATS
------------------------------------------------------------
This is the section where I give away some of my favorite
web marketing tools and other tips.

I can't say enough about SuperStats.com
Getting good statistics about you web site's traffic flow and
patterns is sometimes not as simple as one would hope. I have
built and maintained several websites, including my own, and
have found the perfect solution to getting timely and accurate
stats - http://www.superstats.com

This site will allow you to easily set up a free account, accesible
only by you (or anyone with your password). The perfect solution for
people who don't have their own domain or virtual server and want to
track their visitors. The only requirement is to display the
superstats banner somewhere on your main page - I have no problem with
this since this is a quality service!

Once you login to your account you can find out
Daily hits
Monthly hits
Unique visits
Page visits
Domains
Referers
Browsers used
Monitor resolution
Peak traffic times
and much more

I know people who actually pay their ISP addition fees simply to
have access to statistics! If your doing this then think again, tell
your ISP to take a hike, and get a superstats account.

Cheers
Glenn
