FEATURE ARTICLE
------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry for short-changing you this month but due to a hectic workload I was unable to put together an original feature article. If you have any ideas for future projects that I could tackle I'd like to hear what you have to say. Keep in mind the preferred topic is something subjective such as a product or software review. Something I can research or test out, then offer up my findings and opinion.

If you're a new subscriber, past features have included:
~ Tour of SpatialNews.com website
~ MapPoint 2000 Review
~ MapPoint Introduction
~ Mapinfo vs ArcView comparison
~ A look at ArcView 3D add-ons and Vertical Mapper for Mapinfo
You can find past issues at http://www.SpatialNews.com/spatialnews.html

Something I'd like to bring to your attention is a recent article in the
Canadian publication "ComputerWorld Canada". Carolyn Gruske has taken a look
at the Canadian Geomatics industry and offers up a GIS primer for novices.

The magazine is tough to find in Newsstands but can be ordered for free
if you can get a pull out order from from a past issue. You can find the on-line version at http://www.lti.on.ca and place your free subscription order while your there.

On the other side of the world, I was recently contacted by the publisher
of a Russian GIS magazine called "GIS Review". They have graciously decided
to promote SpatialNews.com and this newsletter in the latest issue. I'm looking
forward to receiving my copy in the mail and calling on a Russian speaking
friend to translate for me.

SPATIAL DATA ON-LINE
------------------------------------------------------------

It seems that almost every time I look through a gis related newsgroups there are always threads that relate to SDTS format data and questions regarding translating of SDTS data to ARC/INFO or other formats.

SDTS is a robust way of transferring earth-referenced spatial data between
dissimilar computer systems with the potential for no information loss.

In the US, compliance with SDTS, also referred to as FIPS 173, is now
mandatory for federal agencies. SDTS is available for use by state and local governments, the private sector, and research and academic organizations. SDTS will be submitted to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for approval.

For more answers regarding the SDTS format go to:
http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/sdts/whatsdts.html

The USGS has made available a free SDTS viewer complete with documentation:
Viewing software dlgv32 http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/viewers/dlg_view.html

At the GIS DataDepot you will find some useful SDTS data conversion utilities.

GIS Data Depot

The GIS Data Depot www.gisdatadepot.com provides the GIS Community
with a single location on the Internet to access over a terabyte of CAD/GIS data for free. You find data for every country in the world from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. The GIS Data Depot is an unbelievable web site with an astonishing array of data for the United States - almost all of which is available for free
download or via custom created CDs for only a nominal fee. You can quickly find free Digital Orthophotos, Digital Raster Graphics, DEMs, DLGs, and numerous county, state,or national datasets in GIS formats without having to search the web or the numerous clearinghouse that now exist. The backbone of their web
site is a dedicated T-1 line - so your downloads will be as fast as your bandwidth allows.

If you have data that you would like to share with others in the GIS Community, the GIS Data Depot is a great way to distribute your data without having to deal with the expensive and burdensome system administration issues associated with maintaining a web server.

GIS IN CANADA, EH! SaskGeomatics
------------------------------------------------------------

Don't worry, even though I'm now sending the Newsletter from sunny Florida I still plan on keeping some Canadian content.

SaskGeomatics, a division of SPMC, previously Central Survey and Mapping
Agency (CSMA). Managing and Integrating Spatial Information Systems
http://www.gov.sk.ca/spmc/sgd/

The SaskGeomatics Division (SGD) is responsible for developing, managing,
and distributing Saskatchewan's basic survey, mapping, and geographic
information systems. A major initiative at this time continues to be the
integration and modernization of these systems into the foundation of a
provincial geographic information infrastructure for all sectors.

Some recent initiatives of SaskGeomatics include:
~ A contract to complete provincial coverage of the SaskGIS base map
infrastructure.
~ A contract that will integrate the federal NTS 1:50000 Topographic data and
the province's Cadastral data
~ A project to establish the definitive Saskatchewan Road Network

An extensive Product list is available on-line.
http://banshee.sasknet.sk.ca/cgi-bin/ppid_data_dir/prod_list.cgi

Each product comes complete with a detailed description and a viewable demo. Data can then be ordered from the website. Themes include, topographic maps, cadastral, township grids, and ortho photos (future).
http://banshee.sasknet.sk.ca/cgi-bin/freedata.cgi
I can't figure out why data themes are accessed by a script called "freedata.cgi" because to my knowledge nothing there is free! (except the sample)

There is, however, a link to the free ArcExplorer from ESRI

SPATIAL WEBMASTER TIPS
------------------------------------------------------------
This is the section where I give away some of my favorite web marketing tools and other tips.

This month's tip isn't really a questions tip, however, I'm sure it's something everyone who travels will appreciate. Do you get stressed out when you go on the road because your not sure how you will be able to access you email? Those of you who are relatively technically savy will likely have no problems, however, there are many people who never have to learn the ins and outs of configuring their email accounts because they need only call the "system person" to
keep them connected.

I was recently faced with this matter because I'm now in Florida but I have
emails going to 2 different email accounts in British Columbia and 3 accounts
elsewhere.

My solution was to sign up for a free email account at Yahoo.com. I can now boast another email address at spatialnews@yahoo.com. The nice thing about this account is that it can be easily configured to access 3 POP email accounts and allows you to customize filters, signatures, and other preferences so no one I'm contacting via email even realizes that  anything is different. Sending and receiving is a breeze and you don't have to worry about attachments or html formatting as these are also handled nicely.

If travelling gives you email stress then get you free email at Yahoo one of the
many other free email handlers that are out there.

Go to http://www.yahoo.com and click on the Mail link at the top of the page
or go directly to http://mail.yahoo.com
