COSI Welcomes New Board Member

7-20-12 (Columbus) – Caroline C. Whitacre, Ph.D. has been named to COSI’s (The Center of Science and Industry) volunteer Board of Trustees. Dr. Whitacre serves as the Vice President for Research at The Ohio State University where she oversees the university’s efforts to stimulate new research and support ongoing activities which include $832 million in research expenditures. She resides in Victorian Village.

Dr. Whitacre is a professor of Microbial Infection and Immunity in the College of Medicine since 1981. She served as Associate Vice President for Health Sciences Research and Vice Dean for Research in the College of Medicine from 2001-2008. She also served for 12 years as the Chair of the Department of Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics in the College of Medicine. Dr. Whitacre received her BA and PhD degrees from Ohio State.

Nationally, Dr. Whitacre has served as chair of grant review boards for the National Institutes of Health, chair of the Task Force on Gender, MS and Autoimmunity for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and president of the International Society of Neuroimmunology. In 2004, she was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

At Ohio State, she has chaired the Presidential Commission on University Governance. In recognition of her university activities, she was awarded the Ohio Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service in 2001 and the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008.

In the community, Dr. Whitacre currently serves as a board member of TechColumbus, the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and the Wellington School. She also serves as the Chair of the SciTech board of directors for The Ohio State University Research Park.

The volunteer Board of Trustees provides dedicated leadership and support, enabling COSI to engage with more than one million individuals every year both on-site and off-site. There are 12 people on the board.
