Explore the Wonders of Your Own Backyard!

Backyard Science Day is March 24, 2012 at COSI

3.23.2012 (Columbus, Ohio) – COSI and ScottsMiracle-Gro are pleased to present Backyard Science Day for the second year. Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 11:00am to 3:30pm, experts from ScottsMiracle-Gro will help COSI guests explore all there is to know about their own backyard.

“We are delighted to be partnering again with ScottsMiracle-Gro for Backyard Science Day,” said David E. Chesebrough, Ed.D., President and CEO of COSI. “It’s a great way for our guests to engage with experts at ScottsMiracle-Gro as well as learning valuable information about the science behind growing plants.”

COSI and ScottsMiracle-Gro will use interactive hands-on demonstrations plus take-home materials to help kids cultivate their green thumbs.

“ScottsMiracle-Gro is committed to educating young people on the science of gardening and nurturing their curiosity about the outdoors,” said Bruce Caldwell, Global R&D Leader, ScottsMiracle-Gro. “We are proud of our partnership with COSI, a staple in the Columbus community.”

Activities will teach kids about soil, how plants grow, what seeds need to grow, how to make their own bird seed and they'll learn about edible gardening, especially city gardening. Kids can learn about soil, what nutrients seeds need to grow and plant starter plants during a growing workshop in Lilypad. Dale Gnidovec from OSU Geology will also identify any rocks or fossils that people bring in from home.

Visitors can go even deeper with our Earthworm Dissection Workshop. Find out what makes them so important and take home a starter worm farm kit. $5 per person, reserve in advance by calling 614.228.2674.

Backyard Science Day is free with COSI admission.
