16 Central Ohio agencies to participate in disaster preparedness event

Columbus (October 7, 2008)-- Emergencies and disasters can strike anyone, anytime and anywhere. They can happen quickly and without warning and can force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. It is vital that you understand what a disaster could mean for you and your family.

Get prepared and get involved at COSI’s Emergency Day on October 18, 2008, 10am-5pm. COSI will bring sixteen Central Ohio agencies together for a full day of simulated emergency responses that will educate, empower and encourage all residents to prepare for emergencies before they happen. Find out what it takes to keep Columbus safe and what you can do until help arrives.

Witness a planned explosion on COSI’s front lawn and the chain of response from the city’s emergency personnel. See a mass decontamination facility which treats patients who may
have been exposed to chemical or biological agents. Ohio State's Burn Center will provide education on burn prevention and care through interactive demonstrations, Meet bomb dogs from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office and see the MedFlight helicopter land right on the front lawn. Tour a fire safe house and learn what happens in a car crash and how rescuers use the Jaws of Life. Tour a HazMat tent, inspect a real decontamination suit, see robots that simulate trauma victims for ER training, and experiment with black light technology to detect glowing germs and learn about looming pandemics. Watch a stroke expert from Riverside Methodist Hospital remove a blood clot from the brain, and learn important home first aid tips. Tour a real catheterization lab, get hands on with the equipment, and meet heart experts from The OSU Medical Center.
