Build a Bridge

Can you cross a canyon?  No problem!  Just build a bridge or other structure, but watch out!  There are forces at work you’ll have to consider if you want your bridge to be strong.

Gravity, compression, tension, and torque will all add to the pressure.  Different materials are used in different parts of the bridge depending on which forces the sections will experience.  Test your creation once you build it to see if it can stand the pressure.

Concepts Include

Gravity The force that tends to pull structures down.  It is balanced by structural support forces.
Compression This force presses components apart.  It is sometimes balanced by tension.
Tension This force pulls components apart.  It is sometimes balanced by compression.
Torque This is a twisting force.  This force is usually balanced by a counter-twisting force.
