Air Cannon at COSI

Air Cannon

Guests lift a bowling ball weight and then drop it through a tube.  This compresses the air in the tube, increasing air pressure inside the tube.  The compressed air finds release by launching a small ball high into the air where it will (hopefully) land in the net.

By raising the bowling ball, you are giving it potential energy.  Potential energy is energy that is waiting or stored for future use.  This potential energy is converted to kinetic energy when the bowling ball falls.  The kinetic energy is transferred to the air in the tube by compressing it, which makes the air molecules move around faster.  The energy in the air is finally transferred to the small ball as the air molecules hit against the ball and launch the ball into the air!
