Octorotosphere
By spinning the wooden wheel at the bottom, all the wheels above will turn. The Octorotosphere is an example of an octahedron, an eight sided figure. The octahedron was one of the perfect solids revered by the ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Pythagoras. There are eight wheels in the sculpture. Four turn clockwise; four turn counter-clockwise. Reverse the spin of one and all the others change too. Can you see why? The wheels move in the same way as gears in a clock or a car engine. Wheels (or gears) that touch always spin in opposite directions. Examine one wheel and all the wheels that touch it, and you’ll see that this is true.
