Ocean Water Cannons

Water Cannons

The Water Cannons demonstrate a special kind of fluid flow called laminar flow. When there’s no turbulence or air disturbing a stream of water, it flows at a constant velocity and in a straight line. See where you can focus the cannon’s flow!

Perfect laminar flow does not occur naturally. It has different properties than a natural flow of water. Laminar flow feels different. Touch the water jet coming out of the cannon, and feel how much more pressure it has than in a fast moving natural stream.

When two laminar flows meet, they form flat fans of water. This organized flow allows light to pass through it undetected, much like a fiber optic cable. The light is only seen when something disrupts the flow, like when the cannons fire at the targets in the fountain.
