Extreme Screen Movie Theater at COSI

The John Glenn Extreme Screen Movie Theater

COSI's Extreme Screen is 83 feet wide and
7-stories tall, which gives an image shaped like that of a television, only much, larger
and more detailed.

Most movie screens are made to take up the entire field of vision of the viewer, large ones are 26 feet high by 65 feet wide.
Extreme Screen Size Comparison

The film used to make large format films is over 10 times the size of standard movie film. That means 10 times the detail can be recorded on the film... making it a better picture.

The light bulb used to power the film projector is a 12,000 watt, xenon arc lamp. Regular movie projectors typically use a 2,000 to 3,000 watt bulb, far above the 60 watt bulb used in homes. This bulb also generates a LOT of heat, so much that we cool the outside of the lamp with air and the internal electrodes with water, kind of like a car engine.
