GDA94 support in ESRI and ERDAS products - 538 Kb -
Australia is in the process of implementing a new datum. This datum, the Geocentric Datum of
Australia (GDA94) is planned to be adopted nationally for all surveying, mapping and navigation
applications.
The move towards the Geocentric Datum of Australia (GDA) results from an international trend to adopt
a geocentric datum to make spatial data compatible with satellite based (GPS) coordinates. The GDA
will provide a single reference framework for collecting, storing and applying spatial data at local,
national and international levels. Prior to the GDA, multiple coordinate sets and datums, AGD66,
AGD84 and WGS84 have been used across Australia creating major problems particularly when
collating data on a national level. With the implementation of the GDA comes the major issue of how
this is being addressed by your GIS software vendor.
ESRI Australia have produced a Technical White Paper to provide details of transforming data to the
GDA using the ESRI and ERDAS suite of products, such as ARC/INFO, ArcView, and Imagine. A
background into datums and common coordinate systems used in Australia is also discussed. More Details at http://www.esriau.com.au/gda/
