3D Design/Printing Part 1

Participants will learn to use Autodesk’s 123D Design software for 3D modeling. Through assistance from mentors, participants will create a 3D model of a logo of their choosing and 3D-print their design on one of COSI’s five 3D printers. Additionally, via an X-Box Kinect camera, each participant will be 3D scanned and saved as a printable file! (3D prints may not be available until a scheduled date/time after the workshop)
  • Program Date(s): November 10, 2016 (3:30pm - 5:30pm)
  • Member Cost: $17 per student + $5 lab fee
  • Non-Member Cost: $27 per student (plus a $1.00 registration fee per registration) + $5 lab fee
  • COSI Admission: Included

3D Design/Printing Part 2

Participants will use Meshmixer software to edit their 3D scans (created in Part 1) and prepare them for 3D printing. Additionally, participants will explore “digital sculpting” software like Autodesk’s Mudbox and 123D Sculpt. (3D prints may not be available until a scheduled date/time after the workshop)
  • Program Date(s): November 17, 2016 (3:30pm - 5:30pm)
  • Member Cost: $17 per student + $5 lab fee
  • Non-Member Cost: $27 per student (plus a $1.00 registration fee per registration) + $5 lab fee
  • COSI Admission: Included

Graphic Art Part 1

Participants will use vector-based software (Adobe Illustrator) and drawing tablets to design a custom graphic. Once created, participants will use a vinyl cutter to create either a sticker or an iron-on t-shirt decal. (Vinyl -cuts may not be available until a scheduled date/time after the workshop)

  • Program Date(s): January 12, 2017 (3:30pm - 5:30pm)
  • Member Cost: $17 per student + $5 lab fee
  • Non-Member Cost: $27 per student (plus a $1.00 registration fee per registration) + $5 lab fee
  • COSI Admission: Included

Graphic Art Part 2

Using a laser cutter and Adobe Photoshop software, participants will create a photo etching that will be laser engraved onto balsa wood. Participants will learn about how a laser cutter functions and how its settings can be adjusted for different types and sizes of material. (Etchings may not be available until a scheduled date/time after the workshop)

  • Program Date(s): January 19, 2017 (3:30pm - 5:30pm)
  • Member Cost: $17 per student
  • Non-Member Cost: $27 per student (plus a $1.00 registration fee per registration)
  • COSI Admission: Included

Coding Part 1

Participants will receive an introduction to basic coding using MIT's Scratch platform and code for a digital environment. Instruction will focus on common control structures, code organization, and program flow for beginning coders, with Scratch's beginner-friendly visual coding system as an analog to multiple real world programming languages such as Java, C#, and Python.

  • Program Date(s): March 9, 2017 (3:30pm - 5:30pm)
  • Member Cost: $17 per student
  • Non-Member Cost: $27 per student (plus a $1.00 registration fee per registration)
  • COSI Admission: Included

Coding Part 2

Equipped with the understanding of basic code structures and flow, participants will transition to the Arduino language (a branch of C/C++) to code for a physical environment. Using the Arduino Uno controller and solderless breadboard prototyping, participants will construct basic circuits and write code to take input from sensors as well as control lights, buzzers, and motors.

  • Program Date(s): March 16, 2017 (3:30pm - 5:30pm)
  • Member Cost: $17 per student
  • Non-Member Cost: $27 per student (plus a $1.00 registration fee per registration)
  • COSI Admission: Included

Green Screen Composting Part 1

Participants will work with DSLR cameras and learn basic camera functions (shutter speed, aperture, ISO, frame rates) and how they relate to shooting with a green screen. Participants will then break into teams and write a script for a short, composited scene, which will be shot during Part 2.

  • Program Date(s): May 11, 2017 (3:30pm - 5:30pm)
  • Member Cost: $17 per student
  • Non-Member Cost: $27 per student (plus a $1.00 registration fee per registration)
  • COSI Admission: Included

Green Screen Composting Part 2

Participants will work in teams to shoot a short scene, featuring elements composited through the use of a green screen and Adobe Premiere software. They will also learn to use a boom microphone to capture audio and mix it into their scene. Videos can be exported and saved via cloud storage or flash drive (storage not provided).

  • Program Date(s): May 18, 2017 (3:30pm - 5:30pm)
  • Member Cost: $17 per student
  • Non-Member Cost: $27 per student (plus a $1.00 registration fee per registration)
